The Christmas Flood of 1964 is something many people have forgotten about or were not alive to witness. The flood caused hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage and lasted for 3 weeks. Considered one of the worst floods to ever hit the Willamette Valley in recorded history the flood displaced 3,000 Oregonian’s from their homes and 17 people lost their lives as a result. Considered a 100-year flood we know that something like this can happen again.
More likely to be remembered is the Willamette Valley Flood of 1996 that flooded Oregon City, Tillamook, and the popular Tom McCall Waterfront Park. This flood is estimated to have caused over $500 million in property damage and left some areas submerged for several weeks. The floods were responsible for eight deaths in Oregon.
